Oroshaza report |

I'll try to put a few reports on here about my time at the Euro champs. Firstly, hot, hot, hot, for those of us from the cold north of England it is hot.
35deg every day. I had originally booked a chalet (wooden house) we took one look at that and said no way, we are now staying in a nice hotel. Many thanks to
Lennart Zoltan who sorted that out for us. The campsite next to the Spa complex is the most convenient, it is ok with some shade if you can get under a tree,
the facilities there are a fairly basic, it is a longish walk from the campsite and adjoining parking area to the race lake, think in terms of Slovenian
campsite to the original race lake, you need to bring a trolley. If you are not staying on the campsite you have to pay 500HUF a day to park. The Hungarians
are extremely helpful and are always available if you have any questions. They have put in a lot of work for this event, the pontoon area is excellent, there
are three electronic score boards that will show the lap scores of all competitors in a race. We had a well organised training today on the race lake. My
engines ran far too hot and I had to change my water-cooling to provide more flow to the engine. I had to make a few other changes to the engines to get them
to run properly, you'll have to guess what the changes were!!!! We had the opening ceremony this evening, a full blown event with majorettes, a brass band
and traffic control by lots of police. There are a lot of competitors here with 430 boats from 20 different countries. The line of people marching down the
road stretched a long way.

Sunday evening
Bart, Thanks for the good luck. Mick, journey distance for us from Europoort was 1016 miles, we did 577 the first day then stayed overnight at a hotel just before the Austrian border, we had a nice meal outside in their beergarten. We prefered to do that than flog ourselves driving non stop. The second day completed the journey, only the last 50 miles is not motorway, this was quite slow with plenty of lorries that are difficult to pass. The other Brits took a different road after leaving the motorway but that was not any quicker. Journey time nearly 10 hours day one, about 9 hours day two including stops. It has been an offshore day today, I've relaxed watching a bit, and spending time in the swimming pool. Just come back to our room after an excellent evening meal accompanied by the Humphries and Smiths. Monday morning is Hydros then I have my first 3.5 heat mid afternoon. |

Hi Robert,
Glad to hear you arrived ok. How bad were the chalets, did you get a bad one or were they all the same? Good luck to you & the other Brits. Keep us posted as to how things go. Grahame |

Hi Grahame, the chalet I had booked was a 3 bed "wooden house", a garden shed would be bigger, two of the beds were matresses shoved together in the
narrow roof space that had to be accessed via a ladder. There are other "chalets" there that are brick built, these I never got to look inside. Even
if they are ok the location of the chalets is grim, and at least a 20 to 25 minutes walk to the race lake, or 10 min drive.
Racing report, organisation really good, the only dodgy bit is that top left is very close to the bank. Viewing on the left of the pits is a bit limited, there is a large control tent taking up quite a bit of room. A small grandstand here would be great for the WC's. On finals day at these Euros, if you are not stood at the front viewing will be difficult. My races. 3.5cc, I was leading the heat around 7 mins gone, there was an out of control boat circling at top left, rescue boat and another dead boat there, I tried to go round the back of them and got hooked in the netting infront of the bank. 7.5cc, second lap a boat spins straight infront of me at top right, I run over it, broken off prop stud and stripped Delrin. 15cc, full 20 min run, in eighth place with 59 laps after all the heats finished. I need at least 60 laps in heat 2 to be safe for a final place.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the fed back on the chalet. I think I will cross those of my list for next year. I take it the hotel is good. If they have any business cards I would not mind having one or a brochure. Good luck in the second heats, How are the other brits doing? Regards Grahame |

It's late but just a quick mention of the 3.5 qualifying. Zak has qualified in 4th place after two really good runs. I have squeezed in, in 8th place for
the 3.5 final, there were a lot of boats with 49 laps and positions decided on the seconds, very close. Dave Humphries has had "things" happen in his
races so far, and Nigel doesn't want to talk about it. Off to bed now, my 2nd 7.5 heat starts at 8am tomorrow.

Well, this is my first event of this size and I have to say I've been on a steep, steep learning curve running boats in these temperatures. Having set the
.21 up during the 'coolish' morning by the time my heat took place we were in blistering sunshine. I really underestimated how much I would have to
lengthen the pipe to cope with this temperature change. It was fine during the latter part of the heat but I'd blown it by then.
I didn't bring a .45 but I did nearly manage a whole lap on the first .90 heat before the terminal failure (piston disentegrated) of my trustee old .90 2000. Still, I was persuaded to invest in a new .91 RS which was duly run in and set for the next heat (Friday) except,...............the wrist pin fell out and wrecked the liner. Got to say Mauro quickly corrected the problem (thank you) and I now have a useable engine again ready for the next heat, albeit un-run. Bit of testing tomorrow first thing, I reckon. Overall, I'd say a brilliant venue (where else could you finish a race and jump in a nice cool swimming pool less than 10 metres from the boating?) and faultless organisation but I've heard bad reports all round about the wooden houses - I have an apartment in the Gyopar Club Hotel which has been perfect. |

Hotels. Nigel has mentioned his and I will come back with the contact details of mine, both are ok.
Well all heats finished now, after my second lap crash with my 7.5 in the first heat, I had a good run today and qualified for the final, I actually span the boat and stopped on the timed finish lap, how jammy is that. I'm in the 15 final as well on my first heat score, today I achieved a long distance flying record with backflip after going over a boat at full speed after it span straight infront of me on the second or third lap. It was such a clean hit that I didn't even break the prop. Dave H was in the heat from hell and was never going to qualify among the madness, I'll leave Nigel to speak for himself. |

Well it is all over, firstly I have to say this has been a great event, the organisation by the Hungarians has been top class, there are certainly no fears
that next years WC's will be anything other than excellent. There have been a few grumbles about having to pay a set fee for entrance to the Spa area and
for car parking, but this is out of the organisers control. For those who thought about coming here and didn't you have missed out.
My finals. I was leading the 3.5 final in the early stages but cocked up by having a side to side with another boat on buoy 1 and coming off worst, a clipped prop and stalled engine. Got going again and finished 6th. 7.5 final, a poor start left me midfield and always behind the leaders, I didn't get lapped and 4 mins from the end was laying 3rd when I spun out on another boat's wash. Shame really because the next lap round the leader fell over and the 2nd placed boat now leading was running out of fuel for the last 3 laps and struggling to pick up after corners. !5 race was short lived, following Mauro who span out on some rescue wash and stopped, I span in sympathy but kept going except my boat reapeared out of the spray and leapt on top of Mauro's, breaking off my prop stud. Zak had a good run and came 5th after a stop. That's all folks see you at Tattershall. |

Robert Daniel wrote: Sure, it was a scary situation. I was running quite rich for most of the race to stay on the safe side and preserve my plug. My strategy was to stay close to the leader for 25 minutes and then lean it for the final 5 minutes to get a bit more speed and try the final pass for the win. It seemed to work out fine, I just didn't realize how rich is was going and my fuel consumption was about 0.4 litres more than what I've calculated after the heats. Luckily I had quite a few Hungarian supporters on spot who kept my engine alive by shouting, blowing, praying, etc |
